The Department of Teacher Education and Foundations (TEF) within the College of Education at California State University, San Bernardino invites applications from a diverse group of qualied applicants for an Open Rank tenure-track position of Reading and Literacy in Early Childhood Education to begin August 2023. The Department is seeking candidates who have relevant background and experience in the PK-3 Early Childhood Education (ECE) Specialist Instruction Credential program. The successful candidate will be passionate in working collaboratively across departments and disciplines to design, implement, and facilitate learning activities throughout PK-3 which engage students according to their developmental levels. The candidate will be able to design classroom learning activities that are supportive and affirming each child's cognitive, social, emotional, linguistic, and cultural experiences, in addition to their relevant background characteristics, assets, abilities, and special needs. The candidate will implement developmentally appropriate practices to create joyful learning experience for children and help maximize the opportunities for all children to achieve their full potential. Additionally, the candidate will be enthusiastic in the taking leadership roles in developing new innovative programs, engaging in and promoting research in early childhood reading and literacy, and supporting University, College of Education, and Teacher Education & Foundations Department strategic goals, which include student success and partnerships with the community to enhance the social, economic, and cultural conditions of the region and beyond.

Job Summary

Candidates must have knowledge, skills and interest in early childhood reading/literacy education, teaching, research, and professional development. Candidates are expected to teach early childhood reading/literacy education courses for teacher candidates, early childhood certificate courses, and graduate students. Candidates are expected to meet the requirements for excellence in teaching, active scholarly and professional work, and service to the University and community.

The successful candidate is expected to:
  • Design and teach early childhood literacy/reading education courses at the credential, certificate, and graduate levels that emphasize high impact instructional strategies and current teaching and learning theories in early childhood reading/literacy education.
  • Implement fun, engaging, and research-based reading/literacy activities that support and enhance children's cognitive development, creativity, language skills, and problem-solving skills.
  • Work with credential, credential, undergraduate, and graduate students
  • Participate in committee assignments at the department, college, and university levels.
  • Supervise student teachers.
  • Engage in research/publication and/or creative activities.
  • Advise and mentor credential and graduate students.
  • Participate in student recruitment to the credential and graduate programs.

Qualified candidates must demonstrate active involvement and excellence in teaching and mentoring/supervising a diverse population of students, working collaboratively and productively with faculty, staff, and administrators within and across programs, departments, and colleges at the university. Candidates are also expected to be actively engaged with the community (e.g., schools and school districts, county office of education, professional organizations, etc.).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Doctorate degree in Early Childhood Education with a focus on Literacy, Literacy Education, or related fields (Degree in hand by time of appointment).
  • Demonstrated ability or potential for excellence in teaching, research, and service to the university and to the profession.
  • Demonstrated evidence of strong knowledge of developmentally and culturally sustaining and engaging instructional strategies in early childhood reading/literacy.
  • Experience of teaching reading/literacy in a PK-3 classroom.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching early childhood literacy/reading at the credential, certificate, or graduate levels.
  • Strong skills and experience in lesson planning, teaching effectiveness, assessment, curriculum development, and pedagogy.
  • A demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with a broad, diverse community.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge and expertise in working with first generation college students.
  • PK-3 Early Childhood Education credential courses teaching experience (or equivalent).
  • Ability to advise, supervise student teachers, and mentor credential and graduate students.
  • Strong evidence of teaching effectiveness (Note: Applicant must include evaluations of prior teaching experience).
  • Experience working with pre and/or in-service teachers in the areas of Early Childhood and Elementary literacy/reading.
  • Skills to design and accommodate a variety of learning activities, including online and blended learning, flexible teaching methods, and applied learning approaches.
  • A minimum of three full years of teaching reading/literacy in a PK-3 Classroom.
  • Experience teaching in classrooms/programs with a substantive percentage of emergent bi- or multilingual students who are learning English.
  • Research/publications and/or creative activities in the areas of Early Childhood Elementary Reading/Literacy.
  • Demonstrated ability/potential to secure external funds for research/projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff from diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated interest and potential to collaborate and build relationships with schools and/or school districts.
  • Willingness to learn/apply knowledge of California's credentialing regulations, and local, state, and national trends.
  • Experience with program coordination and/or leadership in an institution (school district, university, county office of education, community).
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in professional organization/membership related to Early Childhood Education and teacher education.

The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
